The Waitaki Community Gardens in Ōamaru is a community run urban garden where people share knowledge and resources on growing food.

This community green space was established in 2008, and with lots of volunteer hours and creative vision the gardens have continued to evolve to meet the needs of the Waitaki community. The space continues to grow to include larger vege beds, a food forest, more storage sheds, greenhouses, and an undercover workshop space with a pizza oven. There are future plans to increase the size of the gardens and build an enclosed straw bale educational facility. This new building will help to increase teaching capacity and provide a valuable community space to gather year round!

This community project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals with the goal to improve community resilience, reduce food poverty, and increase social connection.

Community involvement is what it’s all about!
